Servant Leader,

Today’s Lesson: Music Matters

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19

Music matters. Some may be more gifted than others in expressing themselves in song, but the Creator has placed within all of us a need for expressions of worship, relationship, experience and emotion. God’s Word bears this out, even dedicating an entire book to expressing this desire. Music transcends culture, language, genre, gender, and age. Whether old school or new school, cominmg from our cars, homes, iPhones, in our places of worship, business, recreation, shopping, or some classic “elevator music,” music is everwhere!

I have often reminded my son, “What you get into, gets into you.” So, as you continue to fast and pray during this season… what are you into? My tastes in music have changed and morphed and I am loving some of the new praise and worship stuff coming from artists young and old! Still, I always make my way back to my roots as ancient hymns fill my heart and mind. When it comes to music are you filling your heart, mind and environment (and that of those around you) with “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs…?” Are the words full of the truth that is Jesus Christ and the message of His love, grace and holiness? How has your choice in music reflecting and influencing where you are at in life… angry and dark, full of question and doubt… or full of faith, praise, gratitude and encouragment?

Music matters. Fill your life and the lives of those around you with songs that lift and build and draw you closer and closer to the One who put music in your heart. Sing to Him (at least make a “joyful noise”) and don’t be afraid to share your song with others!
